Great Glen Way - Day 5 of 6 - Part 1

April 18, Tuesday. From Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit, estimated mileage 14, iPhone recorded 13.5. But this time I understand why. There was a high road and a low road alternative for the Great Glen Way and I chose the high and it turns out it was shorter. That’s probably why yesterdays was shorter too.

Let’s begin in the middle. As I was coming down from the high alternate trail for the Great Glen Way, I met two young women carrying heavy backpacks and chatted with them briefly. Mostly appreciated their toughness to haul those heavy packs uphill. I said I didn’t backpack anymore and I missed it. They told me about a terrific camping spot they had found with a great view of Loch Ness and a bench with a view for eating their breakfast. After I left them I came upon their campsite. Not only was it a beautiful site but it was a reminder of how special benches can be. This one was designed with a curving S-shaped rock wall with a bench giving a south view of the loch on done side and a bench giving a north view of the loch on the other side. Here is the bench facing north and it’s view.

And here is the bench facing south and it’s view. I’m pretty sure this is where they had their breakfast. Of course it does happen to be were the fire pit is too.

So I made benches a theme for the day. I ate lunch on a bench with an interesting shape.

And further along on the walk I came across not just one but two log benches (in totally different places) that made me think of the log benches in Glasgow airport and the log bench that we had when I was a child and that my brother Scott tells me was made by our father.

So in case you are tired feel free to sit down on one of these benches and rest. Meanwhile, I’ve been having difficulty uploading these blogs - too many photos I guess - so I am diving this one into two parts.

Thanks for walking with me. See you in part 2.
