Glasgow Weekend -Friday April 28 -part 2

Glasgow Weekend - Friday April 28 - part 1

We went out to dinner last night at a “world buffet” - including Indian, Chinese, Italian and Scottish food and Sushi bar and I suspect others. It was the biggest buffet I have ever seen. Maybe this photo gives a hint of the scale and how many choices.

I was and am amazed that I could experience it with childlike wonder and awe rather than my usual sense in cities (when I’ve just come down from the quiet and solitude of the trail) that it’s all too much - too many people, too much noise and confusion.

I attribute the ease of transition in part to beginning my visit with a glass of good Scottish beer (to be followed after dinner with Prosecco). For all the villain using I have done of alcohol in my life, I now admit that as Leonard Cohen sings “When I turned my back on the devil, I turned my back on the angel too.” Yes. Alcohol is both muse and monster as I realized listening to Robby Burns.

But it wasn’t just devil-angel, muse-monster whisky (and friends). Though drinking really contributed ease and enjoyment to my transition into the city, my hosts also scheduled a massage for me this morning. Then Natalie took me to visit their club, where we spent time in the hot tub, the sauna, the steam room, the outdoor pool, the heated loungers, and the indoor pool. My body was unimaginably relaxed and happy.

I have never been so nurtured as I have been by these young women. We had homemade chicken soup with great bread and charcuterie for supper and then a walk around the lake gave me a chance to get to know Lydia and Kallum a bit. Lydia practiced her dance steps and Kallum practiced soccer kicks and bumping the ball with his head.

I got to kick the soccer ball with Kallum and talk dogs with Lydia as we walked the lake.

Thanks for coming with me for this immersion in Glasgow and the nurturing love of this family. To be continued in part 3.

  1. How wonderful that you maintained this relationship. And I think if any body deserves a spa it is yours! Shelley

  2. Wow Shelley! You walked my three weeks and 300 miles in (what feels to me like) MINUTES. Thank you and love!

  3. I’m interested to learn about Lydia’s dance - is it a traditional folk dance or a modern dance?
